Tikkun Olam, improving the world, is a central pillar of Beth El’s mission. A variety of programs address the needs of our own community and the community at large. If you would like more information on any of these programs, please contact the office.
Chesed Committee
The Chesed Committee helps our members when they are experiencing illness or other health-related issues. This committee checks in on folks and, when needed, provides groceries, rides or meals to help. If you know someone who may be in need of the services of the Hesed Committee, please notify the office.
Menachem Avelim Committee
This committee exists to help support people who have experienced a loss. During the mourning process people may need help organizing shiva meals, services and other details. This committee is here to help them in any way they may need.
Park Place School
Beth El is proud to house the Park Place School, a private endeavor that serves children who would otherwise fall through the cracks of the public school system. Park Place School currently serves students from grades 1-7. Beth El has become involved by providing volunteers to read with the children who need a little extra help, Halloween and holiday parties, support for the school’s fundraisers and more.
NEST
For one week every year Beth El participates as part of the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team, or NEST. We turn one of the synagogue’s social halls into a shelter to host over 60 guests every night. In order to succeed in this effort we need dozens of volunteers. As well as providing a warm, safe place to sleep, our dozens of volunteers serve our guests breakfast and dinner, and pack bag lunches.
