In 2020, Rabbi Herber became the Senior Rabbi of Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Synagogue, the largest Conservative congregation in the Seattle area, where he led a thriving, inclusive, and engaged community for five years before bringing his talents to Beth El.
Rabbi Herber holds a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in History from the University of California, Davis, and received his Master of Arts in Jewish Literature and rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary. In 2022, he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, by JTS in recognition of his more than 25 years of dedicated service to the Jewish people. He is also a proud alumnus of the prestigious Shalom Hartman Institute’s Religious Leadership Initiative (RLI), where he was named a Senior Rabbinic Fellow.
Deeply committed to building vibrant and welcoming communities, Rabbi Herber has held numerous leadership roles within the broader Jewish world. His past service includes the Board of Directors of the National Rabbinic Cabinet of State of Israel Bonds, Masorti Olami, and the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. He has played an active role in the Rabbinical Assembly, serving on its Executive Council, Nominations Committee, Strategic Plan Implementation Leadership Team, and as Chair of the Commission for a Vital and Connected Rabbinate, guiding its transformation into a relationship-centered global organization.
In addition to his synagogue leadership, Rabbi Herber proudly serves a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Chaplain, providing vital pastoral care and support to Active and Reserve Duty Coast Guard personnel and their families.
A proud Zionist and dedicated supporter of Israel, Rabbi Herber is a long-time AIPAC activist, a former LeFell Israel Fellows mentor, and a former member of the AIPAC Pacific Northwest Leadership Council. His contributions have been recognized with the Jewish National Fund’s Service Award and Masorti Olami’s Rabbi Mordecai Waxman Rabbinic Leadership Award.
Above all, Rabbi Herber treasures his role as a father. His daughter, Mychal, recently served as Director of Communications at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C., and now works as Senior Communications Manager at Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). His son, Adin, proudly serves our nation as a sailor in the United States Navy.
